Radio station in Nueva Ecija harassed by local government
CMFR/PHILIPPINES — Radyo Natin Guimba (RNG) in Nueva Ecija and its reporters have been receiving threats and other forms of harassment from the local government according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP). Nueva Ecija is 131 kilometers south of Manila.
In a statement, NUJP said it has received several reports that the local government unit (LGU), including police officers, harassed RNG in several instances. RNG believes that the LGU may have been irked by the station’s coverage of their response to Covid-19 including some complaints from Guimba citizens.
The attacks included a warning to the radio station for handing out aids to senior citizens (April); threatening to file charges against the station for the supposed violation of the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act (May 11, May 16); barring reporters from covering LGU events (May 18, May 19).
NUJP asked the Guimba LGU to stop harassing RNG and its staff and to address people’s issues instead. The organization added that “all these incidents are brazen violations of the constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of the press and of expression.”
