Radio Blocktimer Shot in Negros Oriental


CMFR/PHILIPPINES —  Unidentified men on a motorcycle shot and killed a radio blocktimer, who was  running for councilor in 2019, in La Libertad, Negros Oriental on 28 December 2018. Negros Oriental is 595 kilometers south of Manila.

Broadcaster Gabriel “Kumander Aguila” Alburo, was on a motorcycle heading home to Guihulngan City when two men on another motorcycle fired at him. The incident happened three days after the broadcaster started his blocktime program in 94.5 dyJL Like Radio. Blocktiming is a Philippine broadcast media practice of buying “blocks” of air time to produce programs independent of networks and stations.

La Libertad Police Senior Investigator Danilo Santillan told CMFR that the broadcaster sustained 13 gunshot wounds and died on the spot. Santillan also said that the investigators are looking into personal grudge as the motive for the killing. 

Alburo is the second journalist killed in Negros Oriental this year after Edmund Sestoso who was killed in Dumaguete on April 30. If proven-work related, the killing of Alburo will be the 13th under President Rodrigo Duterte and the 165th since 1986.
