Journalist arrested in police raid

CMFR/PHILIPPINES — Eastern Vista newspaper Executive Director Frenchiemae Cumpio was arrested, along with four others, in simultaneous raids by Leyte police today, 7 February 2020 in Tacloban City.

Tacloban is 572 kilometers south of Manila.

In an earlier report, Cumpio told CMFR about the continuing harassment she has been experiencing since early December.

She was arrested together with Tacloban-based human rights activists Mira Legion, Maye Domequil, Marissa Calbajao and Alexander Abinguna. They are reportedly detained at the Palo Philippine National Police station on charges of illegal possession of firearms.

Various groups have denounced the raids and the subsequent arrests.

“We demand their immediate and safe release, and call on the public to denounce this latest attempt to silence and intimidate independent media and human rights defenders,” AlterMidya network said in a statement. Cumpio is also AlterMidya’s Tacloban City correspondent.

Kabataan Partylist Representative Sarah Elago called “on the public to denounce this latest attempt to silence and intimidate independent media and human rights defenders.”
