The Peabody Awards announced on April 2 this year’s award winners. GMA News TV was among the 46 television shows and media broadcast winners for their full coverage of Super Typhoon Yolanda.
“Facing logistical challenges and sharing in the national shock in the face of what may have been the most powerful typhoon in history, GMA news teams provided desperately needed spot news coverage and information, gaining strength and perspective as they worked, and followed up with solid reporting on the aftermath, heroic acts and relief efforts,” Peabody said on its website.
This is the fourth Peabody for GMA 7.
The Peabody Awards is the Pulitzer Prize version of the broadcast industry. This year’s winners will be honored at a ceremony in New York on May 19.
MVP acquires 51% of Philippine Star
Businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan (MVP) acquired 51% of the Philippine Star, the newspaper reported on its website April 1.
Interaksyon.com reported on March 31 that Pangilinan is set to acquire an additional 40 percent of the Philippine Star to add the existing 20 percent summing up to 60 percent of share. Interaksyon.com is the online news portal of the TV5, also owned by Pangilinan.
In a report published in the Philippine Star, PhilStar President and Chief Executive Officer Miguel G. Belmonte clarified that Pangilinan acquired 51 percent and not 60.
The Belmonte family currently owns 21 percent of the newspaper as well as ‘complete editorial independence.’
Pangilinan also has 70 percent equity in Business World and a ten percent share in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
