Data Journalism PH 2015

The Open Knowledge Foundation (OKF) and the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) are launching Data Journalism PH 2015, a training program for journalists in light of the growing practice of data-driven journalism in the country.

Teams of up to three members working with the same print, broadcast or online media organization may submit their proposed data story project that will investigate key datasets such as infrastructure, reconstruction, participatory budgeting, procurement, and customs.

The training program will involve a 3-day workshop by the OKF and the PCIJ, a series of online tutorials on a variety of topics including digital security to online mapping, and technical support in content development. The stories produced during the training program will be published by the journalists’ media organization over a period of five months.

The deadline for submission of applications is on June 22, 2015. For more details, visit this page or the Data Journalism PH 2015 website.

Cignal TV signs deal with Bloomberg

MediaQuest Holdings, Incorporated’s Cignal Digital TV has signed an agreement with American-based international news network Bloomberg Television, launching the first 24/7 business news channel in the Philippines.

Bloomberg Television Philippines is scheduled to begin its broadcast in June at the earliest and will be distributed exclusively by direct-to-home satellite provider Cignal Digital TV, which already carries the international Bloomberg channel. MediaQuest Holdings Inc. chief executive officer and president Noel Lorenzana said that talks are ongoing with TV5 to allocate around 40 minutes of airtime to broadcast Bloomberg TV Philippines content on free television.

Lorenzana added that Bloomberg TV Philippines would “elevate the level of finance and business news programming in the country, underscoring the economic gains of the Philippines as one of the fastest growing economies in the world today.”

The partnership makes Cignal the fifth Asian partner channel of Bloomberg, following tie-ups in India, Indonesia, and Malaysia, among others.
