SEAPA Fellowship 2014

Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA), a non-profit, non-governmental organization campaigning for genuine press freedom in Southeast Asia, is accepting applications for its 2014 fellowship program.

This year the fellowship will focus on “promoting a regional understanding of impunity in journalist killings in the Philippines.” The program is in commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the Ampatuan Massacre on November 23.

All journalists in Southeast Asia, except those from the Philippines, may apply for the program.

Deadline for the filing of applications is August 15

Filipina reporter wins AFP Kate Web Prize

Rappler reporter Patricia Evangelista won Agence France-Presse (AFP) Kate Web Prize for her coverage of conflict and disaster in the Philippines, the international news agency announced on July 4.

Evangelista was honored for “her outstanding coverage of a deadly three-week standoff between the Philippines army and Moslem rebels and the devastation wrought by Typhoon Haiyan.”

The Rappler reporter was the fifth recipient of the award.

Previous winners include the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ).

The Kate Web Prize is named after the legendary AFP correspondent in Asia who died in 2007 at the age of 64.

Jessica Soho retires as GMA executive

GMA Network Inc. Vice President for News Program Jesica Soho retired from her executive post, the broadcast network announced on its website July 1.

Soho retired from the executive post to which she was promoted in 2013. The veteran broadcast journalist has been serving GMA for 30 years.

“Under her leadership, GMA News became the leading and most credible broadcast news organization in the country,” the broadcast network said on the report published on its online news portal.

Despite her retirement, Soho will still be a part of the network as an anchor and a reporter of several GMA broadcast program.

Ramon Ang acquires 30% of GMA Network

Businessman Ramon Ang acquired 30 percent of the GMA Network Inc., the media broadcast network reported June 24.

GMA Network Inc. announced that Ang acquired a minority share of the broadcast network but they were still negotiating the final terms of the acquisition. The announcement came after the broadcast network reported on May 5 that GMA Chairman Felipe Gonzon held talks with Ang about the equity.

In a statement of disclosure released by the network, GMA Network Inc said, “GMA Network’s major stockholders have agreed to sell to Mr. Ramon S. Ang a participating minority equity interest in the Company’s outstanding capital stock. The parties concerned are presently negotiating the final terms and conditions of the share purchase documents.”
