2014 Rotary Club of Manila Journalism Awards

The Rotary Club of Manila (RCM) honored journalists and media organizations during the 34th RCM Journalism Awards last May 20.

The awards aim to recognize “outstanding contributions of individuals in the tri-media: print, television and radio thus encouraging the proper development of Philippine Journalism.”

2014 RCM Journalism awardees are as follow:

  • The Philippine Star – Hall of Fame Award
  • Philippine Daily Inquirer – Newspaper of the Year
  • Freeman Cebu – Regional Newspaper of the Year
  • BusinessWorld – Business Newspaper of the Year
  • GMA Network, Inc. (Channel 7) – Television Station of the Year
  • dwIZ – Radio Station of the Year
  • Maria Ressa (President, Rappler) – Journalist of the Year
  • Jojo Robles (Columnist, Manila Standard Today) – Opinion Writer of the Year
  • Atom Araullo (Newscaster, ABS-CBN 2) – Male Broadcast Journalist of the Year for Television
  • Bernadette Sembrano (Newscaster, ABS-CBN 2) – Female Broadcast Journalist of the Year for Television
  • Anthony Taberna (dzMM, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation) – Male Broadcast Journalist of the Year for Radio
  • Niña Corpuz (dzMM, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp.) – Female Broadcast Journalist of the Year for Radio
  • Ernie Maceda (Former Senator, Republic of the Philippines; Columnist, Star) – Special Award

GMA assigns executive to new post

GMA News and Public Affairs has reassigned Howie Severino as vice president for professional development, the network announced on May 5.

Severino is expected to “develop programs for training and career development for GMA’s growing news and public affairs staff, as well as manage efforts to refine the network’s editorial and ethics standards.”

Severino left his position as vice president for multimedia journalism and as editor in chief of GMA News Online for the new position. Taking the position as officer in charge of GMA News Online is managing editor Yasmin Arquiza.

BusinessWorld names editor in chief

Jose Roberto Alampay is the new editor-in chief of BusinessWorld.

Alampay’s name started to appear in BusinessWorld‘s staff box on March 3. He took the position as editor in chief months after businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan acquired 70 percent equity in Business World and then BusinessWorld publisher-editor Vergel Santos rendered his resignation.

Alampay is also a senior manager at TV5 and the editor in chief of InterAksyon.com, TV5’s online news portal.

 

World Federation of Science Journalists’ science journalism course

The World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ) is inviting journalists to take its online science journalism course.

The science journalism course is a series of lessons on “practical and conceptual issues in communicating science,” explaining “how to find and research a story, how to identify which expert is right, how to interview, how to write, and how to use social media.”

The course is open to all journalists, journalism students, and teachers.

The course will discuss:

Lesson 1 – Planning and structuring your work (by Jan Lublinski)
Lesson 2 – Finding and judging science stories (by Julie Clayton)
Lesson 3 – The interview (by Christina Scott)
Lesson 4 – Writing skills (by Nadia El-Awady)
Lesson 5 – What is Science? (by Gervais Mbarga and Jean-Marc Fleury)
Lesson 6 – Reporting scientific controversy (by Killugudi Jayaraman)
Lesson 7 – Reporting on Science policy (by Hepeng Jia and Richard Stone)
Lesson 8 – How to shoot science (by Šárka Speváková and Carolyn Robinson)
Lesson 9 – Understanding statistics (by Hans Van Maanen)
Lesson 10 – Social Media (by Lynne Smit)

The science journalism online course was developed by WFSJ with the help of experienced science journalists from all over the world. It is accessible on all electronic platforms. The Print version of the course is also downloadable.
