World Press Freedom Day Youth Poster Competition

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) office in Bangkok and the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT) are sponsoring a poster contest for World Press Freedom Day.

UNESCO and the FCCT aim to engage youth in Asia and the Pacific in the celebration of World Press Freedom Day on May 3. Youth from Asia-Pacific ages 18 to 35 may join the competition.

Interested applicants must submit a poster that answers the question: Why is press freedom important? The entry must be original and must have a message clearly tied to the theme. It must be a creative presentation and may be in the native language of the participant. The entry should accompany a caption in English explaining the poster as well as translations for any non-English text.

Entries should be uploaded to an online file-sharing service and links should be sent to [email protected]. Entries should be in a digital format (PDF, PNG, JPG) with a file size not exceeding 20MB.

Deadline for submissions is on April 15.

2014 Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism

The Kurt Schork Memorial Fund (KSMF) is accepting applications for the 2014 Kurt Schork Awards in international journalism.

The Kurt Schork Awards recognize journalists for courageous reporting on corruption, conflict, human rights and other important issues.

Every year since 2002, KSMF has been awarding (1) freelance journalists covering international news and (2) local journalists living and working in a country in transition. All freelance and local journalists around the world may apply for the awards.

Interested applicants must submit three separate stories on war reporting, human rights issues, cross-border troubles, corruption or other controversial matters impacting on people’s lives, and published between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014. Non-English stories should be accompanied by translations. A completed entry form, resume, one passport-size photo and a short statement explaining what the journalist had to do to get the story should be submitted along with the entries.

Deadline for applications is on May 31.
