PCIJ co-founder is new Academic Dean at Columbia Journalism School
Co-founder and former executive director of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism Sheila Coronel is the new Dean of Academic Affairs at Columbia Journalism School.
As posted on Columbia Journalism School website, Steve Coll, Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism, announced that Coronel will succeed Bill Grueskin and will assume the role on July 1, 2014.
Coronel started teaching in the school in 2006 as the Toni Stabile Professor of Professional Practice in Investigative Journalism and the Director of the Toni Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism. She is known globally for her investigative works; she wrote for Philippines newspapers as well as the Guardian and the New York Times.
She is also the author of numerous books on investigative journalism and received numerous awards including the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2003. Coronel is also in the CMFR Jaime V. Ongpin awards for investigative journalism hall of fame after winning four top awards in 12 years.
Coronel received a bachelor degree in political science at the University of the Philippines in 1979 and a masters degree in political sociology at the London School of Economics in 1991.

Gawad Plaridel 2014
The University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) is now accepting nominations for the UP Gawad Plaridel 2014.
Now on its 10th year, the Gawad Plaridel award will be given to an outstanding Transmedia practitioner. All Filipinos who have excelled in at least two media platforms are eligible for nominations.
The UP Gawad Plaridel honors Filipino media practitioners who “have excelled in any of media platform and have performed with the highest level of professional integrity in the interest of public service.” The award is given in honor of Marcelo H. del Pilar (Plaridel).
Media institutions, media organizations and individuals may nominate possible awardees.
The award guidelines and nomination forms are available at the UP CMC Website or at the UP CMC Office of Extension and External Relations.

UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize 2014
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is now accepting nominations for the 2014 World Press Freedom Prize.
The prize was established in honor of Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano. It aims to “reward each year a person, organization or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defense and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially if risks have been involved.”
Any citizen of UN member states or any international or regional and professional and non-governmental organization in the field of journalism and freedom of expression may nominate candidates for the prize.
News organizations and institutions promoting press freedom in the world can be nominated.
Interested organizations can nominate by filling out the form that can be downloaded from the UNESCO website and email it to [email protected], or by post to UNESCO, Communication and Information Sector, Division of Freedom of Expression and Media Development, Section for Freedom of Expression, 7 Place de Fontenoy, 75007 Paris, France.
The winning candidate will be presented during World Press Freedom Day on May 3.

Verification Handbook for journalists
The European Journalism Center (EJC) under the Emergency Journalism Initiative (EJI) has released The Verification Handbook, a Definitive Guide to Verifying Content for Emergency Coverage.
The handbook consists of guidelines for using user-generated content (UGC) during emergencies. It prescribes “best practice advice on how to verify and use this information provided by the crowd, as well as actionable advice to facilitate disaster preparedness in newsrooms.”
The book aims to provide a new resource for journalist and aid providers.
The EJC is “an independent, international, non- profit foundation dedicated to the highest standards in journalism, inter alis through the further training of journalists and media professionals. Building on its extensive international network, the Centre operates as a facilitator and partner in a wide variety of journalism-related projects”
