OXFAM Pilipinas, a part of the international confederation Oxfam working with communities in 90 countries, is offering journalists a one-time grant of PHP 15,000 for journalists to write stories on gender issues in the Philippines.

A “global movement of people fighting poverty and inequality through various humanitarian and development projects,” the organization said that the grant aims to highlight the different issues faced by women and girls in their homes, workplaces, and society in general.

The organization will support six journalists who will produce news features and photo essays on the following issues:

  • Sexual & Reproductive Health and Rights
  • Gender-Based Violence
  • Women’s participation & leadership in governance
  • Women’s role in climate and humanitarian action
  • Women’s role in peace-building & social healing
  • Gender equality at home

Journalists with at least three years of media experience are eligible to apply. Accuracy, ethics, and gender-sensitivity are imperative. Grantees will need to produce either a feature article or a photo essay.

The feature article should be around 750 to 1,000 words with an accompanying photo; while the photo essay must include at least 5 photographs. The products should be published in a newspaper and/or a news website in time for  National Women’s Month in March. Freelance journalists may apply, but assurance of publication by news editors would be an advantage. The published stories should include a note that it was “supported by Oxfam Pilipinas.”

The organization should also be allowed to publish the articles and the photographs on its website so as to share it with the rest of Oxfam’s international confederation.

The journalists must also attend two sessions on gender-sensitive and inclusive reporting with Oxfam Pilipinas.

Applicants must submit the following requirements to Oxfam Pilipinas’ Policy Advocacy and Communications Manager April Abello-Bulanadi via [email protected]:

  • Curriculum Vitae,
  • Portfolio or sample articles, and
  • An application letter which includes the pitch for the feature article or photo essay and the name of the news outlet where the output will be published

Applications are open until February 3, 2023, with target publishing dates within March 2023, in time for Women’s month. For more details, visit https://bit.ly/storygrant2023.
