World Press Freedom Day (WPFD), celebrated yearly on May 3, recognizes the fundamental human right to free expression and press freedom. Every year, May 3rd is a reminder for everyone to reflect on the issues affecting journalists and media practitioners around the world — among them media ethics and responsibility, the safety of journalists, and the culture of impunity — as of equal relevance to every citizen as well as to journalists themselves.

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation, adopted at the 26th session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) General Conference in 1991, proclaimed the date.

For this year’s observance, the UNESCO chose the following theme: “Media Freedom for a Better Future: Shaping the Post-2015 Development Agenda.”

CMFR’s webpage will showcase videos touching on media literacy, press freedom protection and the culture of impunity, media ethics and responsibility.

CMFR hopes that our digital platform will provide more information on the role of the media in social and national development and will encourage citizen engagement in the discussion, if not the resolution, of these issues. CMFR also takes this opportunity to remember all those journalists who lost their lives in the exercise of their profession and to hail those who, despite the most perilous times and circumstances, continue to do their duty of providing information to human beings everywhere to help them make sense of their society and the world.
