The roots of the food crisis
CHEERS TO GMA-7 for running a public affairs special last July 6 that looked at the continuing problem of food security.
“Kalam” traced the roots of the food security problem to government’s lack of policy on self-sufficiency. Former Department of Agriculture (DA) undersecretary Arsenio Balisacan said that the government should not remain reactive in the face of crises. The report also highlighted the inability of the DA to provide irrigation and farm-to-market roads, and noted the irregularities that have tainted the agency.
“Kalam” also discussed the plight of farmers, which directly affects the stability of the country’s rice supply. Aside from the traditional and outdated farming methods local farmers still employ, the report noted that new technologies, even if readily available, are seldom transmitted to them.
