Senate and Party-list News takes a Backseat

Media coverage of the Senate and party-list elections waned less than a month before the May 14 elections as other issues competed for media’s attention.

The fourth report of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) monitor of media coverage of the 2007 elections said the decline in the number of reports in the television news programs monitored occurred as the number of television ads from wealthier candidates like Team Unity’s Prospero Pichay Jr. began to overwhelm the two leading TV networks.

From March 31 to April 20, media coverage of the senatorial and party-list election reports declined in the three leading Manila newspapers and the six TV news programs CMFR monitored. The low number of reports was partly due to the attention the newspapers and TV news programs paid to other issues that competed with the elections.
