Political activist sues ex-Inquirer columnist
Political activist Renato Constantino Jr. filed on Tuesday criminal charges against former Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Victor Agustin for “grave slander by deed and maltreatment by deed” after the two figured in an altercation during a media conference last month.
Describing Agustin’s act as “analogous to being slapped in public by a woman,” Constantino sought P5 million in damages from Agustin who doused him with cold water after the activist berated members of Congress holding a press conference on Charter change.
Agustin, who was suspended by the Inquirer for one month due to the incident, could not be reached for comment.

According to Isagani Yambot, publisher of the Inquirer, Agustin “had yet to formally quit the paper.” Agustin, however, continues writing again, but this time for the Manila Standard Today. His column in the Standard Today, which started last January 12, still carries the title “”Cocktales” and the “cocktail glasses” illustration. Yambot said that both Agustin’s title and illustration are copyrighted by the Inquirer.
Agustin doesn’t own ‘Cocktales,’ paper warns
THE Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper has asked Standard Today to stop using the “Cocktales” name and logo graphic with the column of veteran journalist Victor Agustin.
“This issue is best left for the courts to decide,” said Agustin, who now writes his column three times a week for Standard Today’s business section.
For its part, Standard Today intends to use Agustin’s current column name and logo until the Inquirer proves ownership of both in the proper legal forum.
In a letter to MST publisher Teodoro Locsin Jr., Inquirer publisher Isagani Yambot said his newspaper had a certificate of registration issued by the Philippine Intellectual Property Office for the “Cocktales” name and the cocktail glasses graphic that used to appear on top of Agustin’s column when he was still writing there.”
