UP Gawad Plaridel 2014
THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines has named Nora Aunor recipient of the 2014 UP Gawad Plaridel award for her “unique artistry and versatility as a singer,” as well as for “portraying with keen intelligence and uncommon sensitivity an amazing range of cinematic roles.”
Aunor starred in numerous critically acclaimed films which include Minsa’y isang Gamugamo (1976), Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos (1976), Bona (1980), Himala (1982), Flor Contemplacion Story (1995), and Thy Womb (2012). She was also commended for producing films of “notable quality” which “helped raise the bar in Philippine filmmaking. “ Some of the films she produced were Tuisoy (1969), Banaue (1975) and Alkitrang Dugo (1975).
The Gawad Plaridel awarding ceremony will be held on August 27 at the UP Film Institute’s Cine Adarna. Aunor will deliver a lecture during the program.
Gawad Plaridel is an annual award of the University of the Philippines that honors Filipino media practitioners in the fields of print, radio, television, film, online and transmedia who have performed with highest level of professional skill and integrity in the interest of public service. The award is given in honor of Marcelo H. del Pilar. The College of Mass Communication administers the award.
Aunor is the 10th recipient of the award. Previous Gawad Plaridel awardees are Eugenia Duran-Apostol (2004, print), Vilma Santos (2005, film), Fidela “Tiya Dely” Magpayo (2006, radio), Cecilia “Cheche” Lazaro (2007, television), Pachico Seares (2008, community print), Kidlat Tahimik (2009, independent filmmaking), Eloisa “Lola Sela” Canlas (2011, radio), and Florence “Rosa Rosal” Danon-Gayda (2012, television).
AJ+ reporting fellowship program
AJ+, Al Jazeera’s new digital channel, is accepting applicants for a reporting fellowship program. All journalists worldwide may apply.
The AJ+ fellowship program is a one year fellowship that aims to develop six journalists from North America, Central and South America, Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia-Pacific to be a part of the introduction of AJ+ to the world.
Fellows will have the opportunity to work with and learn from the core AJ+ team and to be “at the heart of the next generation of storytellers.”

Thomson Foundation UK Foreign Press Association Awards
The Thomson Foundation is accepting applications for the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA) Awards.Â
The UK FPA Awards honors outstanding young journalists working in a developing country. All journalists from a developing country age 30 or younger may apply for the awards.
Interested applicants must submit a portfolio of published or broadcast works produced from 29 August 2013 to 29 August 2014. The portfolio may be in form of print, audio, video, multimedia or a combination of all four. Entries in a language other than English should be translated verbatim. A completed entry form, a 200 word summary of each story, and a letter of recommendation should be submitted along with the portfolio via email at awardfpa@thomsonfoundation.org
