Seminar-workshop on news media ethics for blocktimers and freelance broadcasters
Greetings from the Center for Media Freedom & Responsibility (CMFR).
CMFR will hold a seminar-workshop on news media ethics for blocktimers and freelance broadcasters, with support from the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy Manila through the US Department of State Small Democracy Grants Program, on January 30 to February 2, 2013 at the AIM Conference Center Manila.
This two-and-a-half day seminar workshop will discuss some of the issues involved in the practice of blocktiming in the Philippines and the role of press in society. CMFR’s research into journalist killings has found blocktimers to be as vulnerable to threats and attacks as regular employees, but may not have as much institutional protection as those on staff. This would also include access to training opportunities that will enable them to keep up with the demands of media coverage, especially during crisis, such as the electoral period.
The program is designed to encourage broadcast networks to make media ethics and professional standards part of their policy. Such training would respond to the many complaints and grievances that have been raised against journalists, including those made in congressional hearings. Ethics training has been found to be one of the ways of strengthening the institution of the press in a democracy, developing strong public support and protection of its members.
The CMFR staff will send an official invitation depending on the available slots. Thank you very much.
