Malaysian cameraman killed, another wounded in Somalia

African Union troops allegedly killed a Malaysian television cameraman and injured his colleague last September 2 while they were in a convoy with a humanitarian aid organization in Mogadishu, Somalia, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) reported.

Bernama TV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor was shot dead while TV3 cameraman Aji Saregar Mazlan was slightly injured after African Union forces allegedly fired on the convoy. Bernama TV is a news agency while TV3 is a commercial television station in Malaysia.

Nor and Mazlan, according to international news reports, arrived in Somalia last August 28. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was investigating the crime, saying in a statement that “appropriate action will be taken against any soldiers found to have acted improperly.”

CPJ also reported that Nor had covered an earlier aid mission to Gaza and Pakistan.

Nor is the second media worker killed in Somalia this year. Radio Simba broadcaster Farah Hassan Sahal was allegedly shot dead by either forces of AMISOM or the Transitional Federal Government last August 4 also in Mogadishu. (NUSOJ/IFEX)
