Case against suspects in killing of Kalinga journalist filed
CMFR/PHILIPPINES –Local police have filed a murder complaint against five suspects in the 3 July 2010 killing of a journalist in Kalinga province.
Jose “Pepe” Daguio, former reporter for Radyo ng Bayan and correspondent of Radyo Natin, died of a single shot to the right side of his chest. Daguio also contributed articles to local newspapers. Daguio is a member of the Kalinga-Apayao Media Club.
He was the first journalist/media practitioner killed under the two-week old administration of President Benigno Aquino III. If his case is work-related, he will be the fourth media practitioner killed in the line of duty after the May 2010 elections.
According to the police, an unidentified man shot Daguio through his house’s kitchen window. He was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police Senior Inspector Benson Macliing, a member of the Task Force Pepe, said the complaint was filed at the prosecutor’s office of Tabuk City last 9 July 2010. He said the suspects are alleged members of a notorious organized crime group.
Macliing said Daguio was known for feeding information on this notorious group to the police.
Jerome Tabanganay, a local journalist in Kalinga, said Daguio was known as a frank person. Local media, he said, are still unsure what the real motive was behind his killing.
Last 15 May 2010, Tabanganay survived an attack by a gunman inside the dzRK Radyo ng Bayan compound in Kalinga. A frustrated murder complaint has been filed against the suspected gunman and his accomplice in the attempted killing of Tabanganay at the local prosecutor’s office last 28 May 2010.
