Warning to Media

Involving media rank and file

In the same discussion, representatives from various media organizations and networks also proposed ways to address these problems. Among the most salient suggestions was to conduct an information campaign among the ranks of journalists themselves.  Some media people, including some covering Congress, are unaware of the implications on their practice of some of the bills being proposed.

Designating media “champions”–media people who can communicate the reservations of the media to the legislators they cover—would also be helpful. As it is, many beat reporters simply write reports even on media-relevant bills without even informing the legislators they usually interview of the adverse implications on media practice and freedom of the bills they’re discussing or have even filed.

Also mentioned was the importance of involving media gatekeepers such as  editors and publishers.

Present in the discussion were, among others, Red Batario of Center for Community Journalism and Development, Vergel Santos and Luis V. Teodoro of BusinessWorld and the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility, Ed Lingao of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, Yasmin Arquiza of gmanews.tv, Toby Mendel, executive director of the Canadian-based human rights non-governmental organization Center for Law and Democracy, Alwyn Alburo and Nonoy Espina of NUJP, lawyers Marie Yuvienco and Rommel Quizon of the Public Interest Law Center which drafted the peitition for live coverage of the Ampatuan Massacre trials, the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Marlon Ramos and Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption vice chair Martin Diño.
