Obit: Wrokpoh, 38

Prominent Liberian journalist Patrick Wrokpoh died after undergoing medical treatment at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital in Monrovia last June 24, 2011. He was 38.

However, according to an article in Frontpage Africa dated June 26, the cause of Wrokpoh’s death wasn’t specified.

Wrokpoh was news Editor for The Inquirer newspaper in Liberia and  a contributor to Pambazuka News of South Africa.  He served as correspondent for several media groups around the world such as Agence France -Presse (AFP), Integrated Regional Information News (IRIN) and African News Dimension. He has been in the profession for 12 years and  was  a senior Mass Communication student at African Methodist Episcopal University when he started in journalism.

Passion for sports journalism was also in Wrokpoh’s blood. The late journalist was also affiliated with the Sports Writers Association of Liberia and acted as the organization’s secretary general from 2000 to 2002. He was also  Sports editor of the Inquirer before he became news editor.

He won  the United Nations Development Program’s  “Best Developmental Journalist Award” from 2008 to 2009  and was the first Liberian journalist who attended and reported the United Nations Climate Change Summit held in Poznan, Poland in December 2008.
