Obit: Breen, 65
Thomas Breen III, a veteran American journalist who covered the Philippines in the twilight of the Marcos dictatorship, died of cardiac arrest at his home last June 22, 2011. He was 65.
Breen started his journalism profession by working for weekly publications in Massachusetts before he worked for The Washington Times.
He was the first city editor of The Washington Times during its founding year in 1982 and eventually became the newspaper’s foreign correspondent in the Philippines wherein he was able to comprehensively report on the fall of dictatorial leader Ferdinand Marcos. The late journalist also became the sports editor and movie critic of the said paper.
Apart from The Washington Times, Breen also had reporting stints in U.S. News & World Report, the Palo Alto (California) Tribune, the Arizona Republic and the Air Force Times. He was also a night editor for Washington Star which has been defunct.
The late journalist was an honor graduate of international studies of Rollins College in Winter Haven, Florida and also acquired a master’s degree in liberal studies and humanities in 2005.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Jenks Breen and their son, Jeb Breen including his father Thomas Breen II.
