Torrejas, 36

FILIPINO BROADCASTER Mildred Borbon Torrejas died of pre-eclampsia on September 29. She was 36.

Torrejas worked as station manager of the now defunct Radyo Natin Kibawe and marketing executive and correspondent for BusinessWeek Mindanao. She was the Bukidnon bureau chief of BusinessWeek Mindanao.

She was also an officer of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines in Bukidnon and a member of the Bukidnon Press Club.

In a statement on Torrejas’ death, fellow journalist Walter Balane said: “We are deeply sorry for the death of our colleague. She was an asset to the group for her personality and her talent. She was active in organizing media events and in joining training workshops for media workers.”

 

Nicholson, 71

AMERICAN JOURNALIST Joseph Nicholson died on October 8. He was 71.

Nicholson worked for the New York Post and covered high-profile court cases and gay and AIDS issues. He was the first openly gay reporter at a big-city newspaper. (Pioneering gay journalist Joseph Nicholson dead at 71, advocate.com)

He started his career in the Post in 1971, where  he broke a story on the secret talks between Havana  (Cuba)and Washington to solve a rash of airplane hijackers. During the 1993 debate on gays in the military, he wrote about his life as a closeted Navy officer in the 1960s. (Former Post reporter Joseph Nicholson Jr. passes away, New York Post)

Nicholson was also a reporter for the Associated Press, the New York Daily News, and Editor & Publisher.

He wrote books including “Inside Cuba” and “A Woman Obsessed: The Murder Trial of Jean Harris.”
