Two of GMA’s regional news programs sign off

TWO OF GMA’s regional TV news programs – Balitang Bicolandia and Balitang Southern Tagalog – aired their last newscast on August 30, 2024. Both programs were key sources for local news and information for their respective areas, the former on the Bicol region and the latter on CALABARZON and MIMAROPA.
GMA Regional TV updated its Facebook cover photo on September 2 to confirm the termination of the two news programs. It did not provide any explanation for the network’s decision as netizens exchanged notes on the change. The closure has further limited the news about regional issues and developments.
Medyo Media, an online platform operated by UP Journalism graduate Albert Lirio, following updates in Philippine media, had promptly observed that the two programs were no longer available as of 7:40 PM on August 30.
The camera caught Balitang Bicolandia anchor, Kate Delovieres, wiping her tears as the program ended. Balitang Bicolandia premiered in 2021, taking over from its predecessor to 24 Oras Bikol and Baretang Bikol, while Balitang Southern Tagalog premiered in 2022 – the two programs addressing GMA’s regional audience.
Delovieres posted on her personal Facebook account: “it was a wonderful 2 years and 7 months,” sharing that despite the heavy heart, she will continue. Meanwhile, Balitang Southern Tagalog’s anchor Ace Medrano’s FB post showed a video of the tearful farewell as program staff bid their viewers and one another goodbye.
GMA Regional TV has retained One North Central Luzon, Balitang Bisdak, One Western Visayas, and One Mindanao.
In a phone call with CMFR on September 11, GMA Network confirmed the closure of the two stations. A representative pointed out that Metro Manila reporters were already covering Batangas and Bicol, reporting on current issues and events in the two provinces. GMA said that it has taken away these newscasts with the promise of “giving more.”
GMA also said that they are committed to incorporating regional content into its national programming and on digital platforms, and aims to maintain its focus on local issues as it revamps its digital channels and online presence. CMFR underscores the vital role of local newscasts and the use of different Philippine languages that enhance public understanding of current events. Regional news enriches the national point of view and builds up the Filipinos’ sense of belonging to a diverse society that makes up the nation.
