Sipin, 54
BUSINESSMIRROR   COLUMNIST Larry V. Sipin passed away on July 1 after a cardiac arrest in Pasig City. He was 54.

Earning his spurs at the alternative newspaper Malaya during the Marcos years, Sipin was noted for his exclusives and good stories.

Sipin had been a columnist for many years in newspapers like The Philippine Star, Manila Standard, and the Manila Times.

Togonon, 55

ROMEO “BOY” Togonon, one of the country’s top cartoonists, died of cardiac arrest on July 20 after a severe asthma attack. He was 55.

Togonon was editorial cartoonist of The Manila Times until he died. Before joining the Times, he worked for Sun.Star Manila, Sun.Star Bulilit, the Daily Globe, and the Manila Chronicle. He designed the masthead of Sun.Star which the publication still uses today.

He was a cartoonist and art director for 27 years.  A press freedom advocate, he was founding member of the Samahang Plaridel. He served as director in the National Press Club (1989-1990 and 2000-2001) where he was recently elected NPC director.

Togonon graduated BS in Fine Arts and Advertising Art at the University of Santo Tomas. In 1978, he helped organize the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas with prominent artists like the late Larry Alcala and Nonoy Marcelo. He was also founding chair of KartunAsia, the first organization of cartoonists in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
