Reporting goals (un)met
Cheers to the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) for a report evaluating how the Philippines is faring in achieving the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
In time for Pres. Benigno Aquino III’s visit to the United States, partly to attend the United Nations summit on the MDGs (Sept. 20 to 22), the article, released online as a two-part report Sept. 5 and Sept. 6, and on The Manila Times as a six-part report (Sept. 6 to 11), reported on how the Philippines falls short of the MDGs, particularly in reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, achieving universal education and eradicating poverty. Aquino inherited all these from former President and now Pampanga Second District representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Online, PCIJ also tracked the country’s progress in attaining the MDGs. As reported earlier, the MDGs focus on eight issues that need to be addressed to improve the standard of living across all developing nations. Adopted by 192 UN-member countries in 2000, the eight goals include, apart from the above-mentioned, promoting gender equality, combating HIV/AIDS, ensuring environmental sustainability and developing a global partnership for development.
