Explanation please
Jeers to the Cebu Daily News for failing to explain and provide context in its report on the extension of the zero-tariff policy on wheat and cement.
The Sept. 13 report failed to define what a tariff is and what the consequences are if the two executive orders that mandate zero tariffs on wheat and cement are extended as recommended by the Dept. of Trade and Industry.
The report also failed to explain why wheat and cement are exempted from tariffs.
Tariffs are taxes on imported and exported products. With the absence of tariffs, imported and exported products would be cheaper. However, it would also mean less taxes collected by the government.
