Demeaning—again
JEERS TO the Philippine Daily Inquirer and The Philippine Star for using as banner photo, a picture of Miss World Philippines candidates in their bikinis.
The Inquirer and The Star published on September 30 photos of Miss World candidates in their swimsuits. The photos occupied almost a third of both papers’ front pages. The photos did not have accompanying articles.
The Manila Bulletin also published a photo of the same event, but on page 7.
On May 3, the Inquirer published a full body photo in bikini of the winner of the Miss Bikini Philippines pageant. CMFR pointed out in a monitor that “a practice common in the tabloids, such depictions of women have long been criticized as demeaning. The photo was also an anomaly on the front page of a broadsheet, and provokes the question of for what journalistic, public interest purpose the Inquirer did it.”
