Covering the Impeachment Missing: The Voice of the People
Trivial
TV5’s Balitaang Tapat reported on Jan. 18 on the Twitter exchange between Senator Judge Francis Pangilinan and celebrity wife Sharon Cuneta. Cuneta tweeted husband to come home early when Pangilinan tweeted her about the postponement in the trial. The report was supposedly for the “lighter” and “romantic” side of the “serious” impeachment trial.
GMA News TV’s live coverage had a penchant for putting appearance over substance When the senator judges went out of the Senate Lounge after a caucus, the anchor asked the reporter on the field about the facial expressions of the senator judges as they entered the session hall, as if its viewers could not see for themselves. The senators had voted on Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano’s appeal on the ruling of presiding officer Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile junking the motion of the prosecution to subpoena the wife, daughter and son-in-law of Corona.
The usual unanswerable and therefore pointless questions– what could Corona be thinking as the camera focused on him when he attended the first day of the impeachment trial or if Vidal, upon her arrival at the Senate, looked confident or nervous—were also in ample evidence.
