Covering the Campaigns

IN THIS issue, PJR Reports asked several reporters to write about their coverage of the campaigns of three groups: the administration ticket Team Unity, the Genuine Opposition, and the Catholic group Ang Kapatiran. Election coverage has always been a treasure trove for stories and lessons on political reporting. But rarely do the dynamics between journalists and news sources get written about and shared with the public. If more people knew how a story gets to be written and what a journalist goes through while getting a story, perhaps they would look at the news differently. The news will be seen not just as a chronicle of events but the outcome of many challenges from which journalists emerge victorious—or defeated.
Here are the accounts of three reporters, two of whom have asked that their real names not be used.—Ed.
