SEAPA’s 2007 journalism fellowship program opens
APPLICATIONS are being accepted for the 2007 SEAPA (Southeast Asian Press Alliance) Journalism Fellowship Program which has the theme, “Human Rights vs a Culture of Impunity in Southeast Asia.”
Fifteen fellowship slots are available to journalists from Southeast Asia. To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must have at least five years’ experience in any medium (print, TV, radio, or online), either as members of media organizations or as freelancers. They must have written about social, political, or economic issues in their countries and be interested in writing in-depth human interest stories or investigative pieces.
Based on professional credentials and story proposals, the fellowship program will provide fellows with limited travel to a second Southeast Asian country where they can spend up to three weeks researching and writing or producing a story of their choice.
To apply, interested individuals must submit:
• A story proposal in English based on the theme, “Human Rights Versus a Culture of Impunity,” by March 7, 2007. The essay, which should be no longer than 500 words, must also introduce the applicant and explain his/her story proposal.
• A brief resumé, with emphasis on current job.
• Two samples of their published/broadcast work.
• Two letters of reference, including one from their supervising editor (in the case of media staff members), stating that they have permission to compete for and take part in the program, which will run from the first week of May to the first week of June 2007.

The deadline for applications is March 7, 2007. Fellows will be announced in the last week of March 2007.

EC journalism awards accepting nominations
The 15th Lorenzo Natali Prize for Journalism Excellence in Reporting Human Rights, Democracy and Development is now accepting applicants.
The competition is open to print and online journalists employed by the local media organizations all over the world except for North America.
Eligible journalists should have written reports focusing on human rights or democracy in the developing world. Each applicant is allowed to submit one article published between Sept. 1, 2005 and Dec. 31, 2006.
All prize nominees will be special guests of the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium. First prize winners will each receive a trophy and a financial award of €10,000.
Interested parties need only to fill in the application form available at www.nataliprize.eu and submit it along with an electronic version of the article.
Deadline for entries is Jan. 31, 2007.
Sir Antony Fisher International Memorial
The Sir Antony Fisher International Memorial Awards, an annual program which recognizes institutes that made the greatest contribution to public understanding of the economy through their publications, is now open for entries.
Each application must consist of: (a) a letter of nomination written in English from the research institute’s director even if the entry is produced in another language; (b) two copies of the nominated publication; and (c) up to 20 pages of supporting evidence, such as letters, press coverage, etc.
