Beyond hate crime reporting
CHEERS TO GMA-7’s Balitanghali and 24 Oras for going beyond the usual reporting of “hate crimes”.
The report was just around two minutes, but was able to comprehensively discuss the issue of discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders (LGBT) in the country. The report reviewed a similar case and included interviews with stakeholders including advocates.
The report showed that from 1996 to 2011, 144 LGBTs died due to hate crimes. The statistics were from the Philippine LGBT Hate Crime Watch.
The report concluded that anti-discrimination bills, if passed in the Congress, won’t be of much use unless the public learns to respect the rights of the LGBT community.
