Shoot first, ask questions later
Jeers to The Philippine Star for shooting first and asking questions later.
Last April 11, the Star claimed that President Benigno Aquino III had fired his aunt, Margarita “Tingting” Cojuangco, as president of the government-owned Philippine Public Safety College. The report was headlined “Pnoy fires Aunt”.
However, the report’s lead was inconsistent with the headline. It stated that whether Cojuangco “resigned or was replaced” had not yet been confirmed by the paper.
Despite this lack of verification, the Star went ahead with the story and published it on the front page On the contrary, other media organizations confirmed that Cojuangco had resigned and had not been fired.
The next day, the Star’s follow-up story was Cojuangco’s denial that she had been sacked by her nephew.
