Puff piece

Jeers to The Manila Times for its puff piece on Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista.

The April 18 front-page article “Quezon City eyes premiere status” initially discussed the possibility of Quezon City’s regaining the country’s title as its capital. The report also mentioned local government plans for creating a Central Business District in the city.

But the article quickly shifted its attention to Bautista, with the reporter asking him about his political ambitions, to which he provided the usual motherhood answer. ( “I leave that to the Almighty. If it’s not God’s will, your dreams will not come true. I’ll just take it one day at a time.”)

The article then detailed Bautista’s history, apparently now on its 25th year, as a public official. He was also asked what was his biggest challenge as mayor.

The article somewhat returned to its original focus which was Quezon City, but all in all it was still predominantly on Bautista the personality.
