18th Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop
The 18th Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop of the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) is now open to applications.
Fulltime journalists and selected journalism educators and students may apply. The workshop this year has “Investigating Corruption in Media and Government” for its theme and will be held from October 3 to 8 at the UP CMC in Diliman, Quezon City.
Journalist applicants should be below 45 years old and should have been engaged in journalism with at least two years’ working experience. Applicants are required to submit an application letter; a resume; two published/broadcast news reports; a story plan for an investigative report on corruption in media or government; and an endorsement from their editor, local press club president or a Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop alumnus.
The workshop will also have limited slots for senior journalism students. Student applicants must submit an application letter, a resume, sample works and an endorsement from their professor, department chair or dean.
Interested applicants may submit the requirements to the Project Director, 18th Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop on Reporting Corruption, College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. The workshop covers board and lodging and transportation to and from the workshop venue of each participant. No fee is charged.

Thomson Reuters writing and reporting news course
Thomson Reuters is accepting applications for a video news course.
All working broadcast journalists or contributors to broadcast media organizations in Southeast Asia with at least two years’ experience may apply for the training program which will be held from August 11 to 15 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The five- day course aims to teach “creative approaches in producing television news stories.” Lectures include research, writing for TV, camera work and editing.
Interested applicants must submit a biography of up to 250 words outlining his or her journalism career; two recent work samples with a brief summary in English (if necessary); and a statement of not more than 500 words describing any experience in presenting television or radio programs, reporting, script writing, producing or video-editing and how the course can benefit the applicant.
Travel expenses to Hanoi and accommodations will be shouldered by the sponsors.
Deadline for applications is July 14.

National Public Radio reporting fellowship
US National Public Radio (NPR) and the John Alexander Project are accepting applications to the Above the Fray Fellowship.
The fellowship is designed to “give a promising radio journalist the opportunity to cover important but under-reported stories from a location abroad.”
All radio broadcast journalists worldwide may apply.
Interested applicants should have at least three to five years of professional experience and must “express sincere interest in innovative foreign reporting, a curiosity about global cultures and a demonstrated record of journalistic potential.”
Applicants must submit a resume; a 700-100 word pitch of a story idea; 100-400 word answer to the question “What else should we know about you?”; two links of work samples; and two professional references. All the required information should be consolidated in one PDF document with the name of the applicant and should be sent to 2014@thejohnalexanderproject.org.
Successful applicants will have a chance to conduct a reporting project abroad.
Deadline for applications is on July 1.
