17th UP Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop names fellows
The University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) has announced the names names of the 18 fellows for the 17th Graciano Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop.

Fourteen of the fellows are journalists and educators while are four students.
The journalists and educators fellows are Bernardino Balabo from Promdi News, Jefferson Caparas from TV5, Janess Ann Ellao from Bulatlat.com, Ofelia Empian from Baguio Chronicle, Marvin David Ferraz from Rappler, Charmaine Ivy Hernando from St. Mary’s University, Ainjeliz Orong from The Freeman Newspaper, Carla Padilla from Central Luzon State University and the Cabanatuan Herald, Jessa Mardy Polonio from the Baguio Chronicle, Rommel Rutor from dyMS Aksyon Radyo, Macey Salabit from Dyaryo Veritas, John Rizle Saligumba from Davao Today, Seymour Sanchez from Far Eastern University, and Divina Suson from dxRJ Iligan.
The student fellows are Iza Darlene Cay of Tinig ng Plaridel and VERA Files, Luis Adrian Hidalgo of Tinig ng Plaridel, Candeze Mongaya of Project NOAH and a former reporter of the Cebu Daily News, and Vince Alvic Nonato of VERA Files. All are students of the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.
This year’s theme for the workshop is “Media and Disasters: Reporting for Accountability.” The fellows will undergo a week long workshop from October 13 to 19 at Plaridel Hall, UP Diliman, Quezon City.
Human Rights Advocates Program
The Institute of Study of Human Rights (ISHR) is accepting applications to its Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP).
HRAP is designed to “strengthen the skills, knowledge, and networks of proven human rights defenders at the grassroots level.”
Journalists from low-income countries may apply.
Interested applicants must sign up at http://hrcolumbia.org/hrap/apply/ and complete the application form online. Applicants must also submit a recommendation letter, in English, from their employer or from their international organization if applicable.
Accepted applicants will go through a series of workshops and seminars including Columbia University classes and meetings with policy makers and potential funders for future campaigns.
Deadline for applications is on November 1.

Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Awards
The United Nations is accepting entries to the Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Awards. This is an annual award given to professional editorial cartoonists around the world. It was established to “promote the highest standard of excellence in political cartoons depicting the spirit of the United Nations.”
Entries should be editorial or political cartoons published between September 1, 2012 and October 15, 2013. It should reflect the fundamental UN principals, mutual respect and friendship among nations, importance of human dignity and economic consideration and environmental responsibilities among different nations.
Applicants for the award must submit a reproduction of the published editorial cartoons with the name of the publication, language and date of the publication and newspaper reprints. Reprints must be translated into English if it was written in another language.
Deadline of application is on November 15.
