Sylvia Mayuga, 77

AWARD-WINNING writer Sylvia Mayuga passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2019. She was 77.
Mayuga was one of the columnists of Bulletin Today who wrote critically of the Marcos dictatorship. She was also a poet and documentary filmmaker.
The Women Writers in Media Now (WOMAN) announced Mayuga’s passing in a statement. “A writer, Sylvia remembered first scribbling a script for a cartoon strip when she was eight years old… Consistently, she wove biography and autobiography with threads of the larger histories of her country and the world, revealing a visionary strain as she wanders Between the Centuries (the title of her last book of essays).”
Mayuga published the books “Spy in my own country,” “Earth, Fire, and Air,” “Huling Ptyk: The Art and Life of Nonoy Marcelo” and “Between Centuries.” She has won three National Book Awards.
She also contributed to different media organizations such as GMA News Online, Manila Bulletin, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Rappler and The Philippine Star.
Mayuga studied at St. Scholastica’s College and St. Theresa’s College before taking her Masters in Comparative Journalism at Columbia University.
She is survived by her son and four siblings.
