Philippine Daily Inquirer shuts down operations, merges with Inquirer.net

THE PHILIPPINE Daily Inquirer (PDI) announced on Friday, May 2, the merger of its print and digital operations, effective on the first of July this year.  

An official statement posted on the company’s social media pages and news website said: “With the integration of print and digital operations, the Inquirer’s financial foundation would be strengthened and its ability to deliver news in traditional and digital platforms enhanced.” 

PDI is in charge of its newspaper publications. Inquirer Interactive currently holds the group’s digital operations which includes its social media and website functions.

PDI said that some members of Inquirer Interactive of the editorial team have been invited to participate in the management of the multimedia platform.

PDI’s Board of Directors has committed to ensuring that employees who lost their jobs because of the merger “shall receive severance or separation benefits that may be due them under the law or as stipulated in the collective bargaining agreement with the PDI Employees Union.”

The Inquirer Group seeks to strengthen its long-standing reputation and introduce new ways to engage Filipino readers through both digital and print news formats. The group aims to “be able to expand its ability to connect to a broader audience across all media platforms.”
