Floreño Solmirano, 70
VETERAN JOURNALIST Floreño Solmirano died June 27, Monday. He was 70.
Solmirano was the former bureau chief of Inquirer Southern Luzon. He started as an Inquirer correspondent in Bicol. In 1998, Solmirano, together with other Inquirer reporters, organized the Southern Luzon bureau of the paper, which covers CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) and MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan). He served as the chief of the bureau for 13 years until his retirement in 2011.
After his Inquirer career, Solmirano served as the bureau chief of the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in Bicol. He also became the founding editor of Bicolandia Times and served as president of the Albay-Legazpi Press Association (“Solmirano, ex-PDI bureau chief dies; 70,” Inquirer.net, June 29, 2016)
He will be buried at the Forest Lake Memorial Park, Legazpi City on July 6, his 71st birthday.
Donna Kelley, 66
AMERICAN REPORTER Donna Kelley died June 26, Sunday. She was 66.
Kelly was a longtime reporter and anchor for the Arkansas-based radio. She worked for the station for 14 years, appearing on weekday afternoon programs and newscasts.
Kelley has battled various illnesses over the past years, including arthritis and several hip surgeries. On Sunday, she was found lying on her apartment floor. Kelley was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived.
Friends and colleagues mourned the passing of Kelley. Kieth Liesmann, market manager of Cumulus Broadcasting which owns KARN, remembered Kelley as an outstanding journalist. “Donna was an outstanding reporter/anchor who served with the highest degree of journalistic integrity at KARN for a decade and a half. Donna was at her happiest when she was working on a news story and never let anything keep her from getting her job done. She was a friend to everyone she worked with. She is survived by her husband.
