IN LINE with the 22nd pride celebrations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and ally (LGBTQIA) community in the Philippines, allies from the media industry were recognized in the Bahaghari Media Awards 2016 held last June 24.

According to Angie Umbac of Rainbow Rights Project, Inc. (R-Rights), “The Bahaghari Media Awards spotlights media heroes who provide an inclusive, equal and non-discriminatory platform for reporting on LGBTQIA issues, and who – against the odds – continue to inspire others in their profession to positively feature the diversity of the LGBTQIA community.” The Awards started in 2013.

The list of awardees this year includes journalists namely Cheche Lazaro, Jessica Soho, Maria Salvacion “Inday” Espina Varona-Mendiola, Karen Davila, Vicky Morales and Kara David.

Also awarded were: Dr. Margarita Go-Singco Holmes and Dr. Sylvia Estrada Claudio, who both write columns for Rappler; renowned theater actress and singer Lea Salonga, who writes a column for The Philippine Star; and UP professor Solita “Winnie” Monsod, who writes a column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Psych O’clock Habit, a radio program produced by the UP Psychology department and aired over the university’s radio station DZUP 1602, also received recognition.

The awarding event was hosted by R-Rights and Outrage Magazine with support from the United States Embassy in Manila.
