IPC Roundtable Discussion on Media-based Data Analysis of Federalism-related Emotions
THE INSTITUTE of Philippine Culture (IPC) is inviting journalists, researchers and students to its roundtable discussion “Collective Emotions about Philippine Federalism: Media-based Big Data Analysis.”
The IPC is a social science research organization based in Ateneo de Manila University that “seeks a better understanding of culture and society in the Philippines and other Asian countries, an improved quality of life for disadvantaged groups, and a more peaceful, just, and national and global society.”
The IPC will present a collaborative study by political psychology professor Dr. Cristina J. Montiel and Mr. Joshua Uyheng of the Ateneo De Manila Department of Mathematics.
The research identifies federalism-related topics, such as Tatay Digong, Imperial Manila, political dynasties, and charter change, that have evoked collective emotions—fear, contempt, amusement— from readers of Facebook comments and newspaper columns. The data were obtained from 9071 Facebook comments and 259 opinion columns. They were then extracted through running standard web scraping scripts, natural language pre-processing, and other social computing procedures.
The research presentation will be held on Friday, July 27 2018, from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm in CTC 101, PLDT-CTC Building, Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
For inquiries and confirmation of attendance, e-mail Ms. Shyl Sales, IPC Administrative Assistant at ipc.soss@ateneo.edu or call (02) 426-6067 loc. 213/100.
