3rd Gawad Agong para sa Pamamahayag

Media practitioners who produced outstanding reports on indigenous peoples (IP) issues were recognized in the 3rd Gawad Agong para sa Pamamahayag held last October 29 at the UP College of Mass Communication Auditorium.

Lumad leaders participating in the Manilakbayan 2015 handed the awards to the winners. Gawad Agong gave citations to two indigenous media institutions: Northern Dispatch Weekly (Nordis) and Radyo Sagada, both based in the Cordillera region. Two media practitioners from IP groups were also recognized: Raymund Villanueva of Bulatlat.com and Kodao Productions (Ibanag), and Joe Torres of UCANews (Subanen).

Other winning journalists were: Tina Panganiban-Perez of GMA Network for TV news feature “Mga Mangyan sa Puerto Galera, nanganganib mapaalis dahil sa landfill”; Malu Cadelina Manar of Notre Dame Broadcasting Corporation for radio news feature “Proud Manobo”; Raymund Villanueva and Fr. Delfo Cenceran, OP, for “Manilakbayan ng Mindanawon, Panawagan para sa Katarungan” aired over the Radyo Veritas 846 program TalaAkayan; Dee Ayroso of Bulatlat.com for online news “Lumad women: Our place is in the struggle”, Raymund Villanueva of Bulatlat.com for his photo essay “The Banwaon Children of Balit; Bernard Testa of Interaksyon.com for the multimedia report “Disrupted dreams: Lumad children’s art portrays their hopes and dreams”; Jay Sabale of GMA Network for the TV news report “Grupo ng mga Lumád sa Mindanao, tuloy ang protesta laban sa gobyerno”; and Malou Mangahas for news documentary “What is the cost of building a sanitary landfill?” aired over GMA News TV.

Gawad Agong is an annual event organized by the Kalipunan ng mga Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas (Katribu), Koalisyon ng Katutubong Samahan sa Pilipinas (Kasapi), Cordillera People’s Alliance (CPA), and Kusog sa Katawhang Lumad (Kalumaran). It is an undertaking of the Indigenous Voices in Asia Project in the Philippines (IVA-Philippines), with support from the Swedish Initiative for Development Aid (SIDA) and the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP).
