The Philippine Press Institute (PPI) announced on May 15 the winners of the 2014 Civic Journalism Awards.
The Mindanao Cross was named Best Edited Paper in the weekly category and was acknowledged for its “remarkable approach of conveying concerns in a regional perspective while embodying excellence in writing and photojournalism which captures a substantial meaning of the situation in the community.”
Edge Davao won the same award in the daily category and was recognized for “allowing the readers to arrive with a stand, succeeded in manifesting the conviction of the community members while embodying transparency and excellence in delivering the news to the community.”

The awards program, now on its 19th year, aims to honor community newspapers in the country for editorial excellence and for their role as catalysts for community development.
PPI 2015-2016 Board of Trustees
The Philippine Press Institute (PPI) elected its new Board of Trustees on May 14 at the Diamond Hotel in Manila.
Lawyer Jesus G. Dureza of the Mindanao Times was reelected chairperson and president and trustee for Mindanao while former PPI chair and president Amado P. Macasaet of Malaya continues to serve as chairman emeritus.
Newly appointed trustees by virtue of acclamation are:
Luzon – Joenald Rayos, publisher and editor-in-chief of Pahayagang Balikas
Visayas – Salvador Diputado, editor-in-chief of Bohol Times
Mindanao – Allan Mediante, executive editor of BusinessWeek Mindanao
