PPI Elects New Officers

THE PHILIPPINE PRESS INSTITUTE (PPI) elected members of its board of trustees and executive officers last Wednesday, June 22, during its Annual Membership Meeting at Century Park Hotel in Manila.

Alfonso Pedroche, editor-in-chief of Pilipino Star Ngayon, was elected chairperson-president. He will replace outgoing chair Jesus Dureza of Mindanao Times, who has been named presidential adviser on the peace process in the incoming Duterte administration.

The other members of the Board of Trustees elected last June 22 are:

  • Salvador Diputado (Bohol Times), vice chairman and trustee for Mindanao
  • Joenald Rayos (Pahayagang Balikas), treasurer and trustee for Luzon
  • Amalia Cabusao (Mindanao Times), secretary and trustee for Mindanao
  • Allan Mediante (BusinessWeek Mindanao) and Adrian Amatong (Mindanao Observer), trustees for Mindanao
  • Maria Fajardo (Panay News) and Queenie Bronce (The Freeman), trustees for Visayas
  • Sonia Daoas (Cordillera News Agency), trustee for Luzon

The membership meeting also marked the start of PPI’s two-day 20th National Press Forum, which had the theme ā€œUnderstanding the Disputes in the West Philippine Sea.ā€

2015 PPI Civic Journ Awards Winners Named

THE WINNERS of the 2015 Civic Journalism Community Press Awards were honored by the PPI in a ceremony last Thursday, June 23 at the Century Park Hotel in Manila.

The annual awards aim to raise the standards of community journalism in the country and recognize news organizations ā€œnot only for editorial excellence but also for their role as catalysts for community development.ā€ The competing newspapers were screened by universities per region and chosen by an independent national board of judges.
