PHOTOGRAPHERS WORKING in conflict situations worldwide may now apply for grants from The Aftermath Project.

The Aftermath Project is a non-profit organization committed to telling the other half of the story of conflict—the story of what it takes for individuals to live again, to rebuild destroyed lives and homes, to restore civil societies, to address the lingering wounds of war while struggling to create new avenues for peace.

The Project seeks to help broaden the public’s understanding of the cost of war through international travelling exhibitions and educational outreach in communities and schools.

The Project also holds an annual grant competition for photographers worldwide covering the aftermath of conflict. This year’s grant amounts to US$25,000.

Proposals are not limited to international wars and may relate to the aftermath of numerous kinds of conflict. For example, at the community level, violence between rural ethnic groups or an urban riot in an industrialized country. It may have been a regional one, such as a rebel insurgency, or it may have been a full-scale war. There is no specific time frame that defines “aftermath,” although in general, the Project seeks to support stories which arecovered less by mainstream media.

Entries should include an explanation of the specific aftermath issues related to the project being proposed, as well as an overview of the applicant’s plans for covering the story during the course of the grant year.

To qualify, an application must include a signed application form, a project proposal not exceeding two pages and a portfolio of no more than thirty photos to be submitted on or before November 30, 2018.
