Gawad Plaridel 2013

THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) named Jose Maria “Pete” Lacaba Jr. the 9th Gawad Plaridel awardee for his exemplary performance in the field of Journalism last July 24 at the UP Film Institute Film Center, Diliman, Quezon City.

In his lecture that followed the awarding of the Gawad Plaridel trophy sculpted by National Artist Napolen Abueva, the multi-awarded journalist and writer stressed truth-telling in harnessing journalism for development.

According to a press release of the UP CMC, Lacaba “has shown unparalleled dedication to the profession of writing through a variety of forms in which he excelled – poetry, essay, fiction, feature articles, interviews, translations, adaptations, and screenplays in both English and Filipino. He also raised the bar of excellence for literary journalism to a level unprecedented in the history of Philippine contemporary journalism.”

In his lecture Lacaba also encouraged the audience to further assert and strengthen  freedom of the press.

Lacaba noted, “Ang pagsasabi ng totoo, masakit man sa tenga ng ilan ay magbibigay ng matibay na pundasyon sa malaya at maunlad na bansang gusto nating itatag o patatagin (Truth-telling, even if it is unpleasant to other people’s ears, is the strong foundation for the  free and progressive country we want to build and strengthen).”
