Silva, 80

VETERAN FILIPINO journalist Zenaida Silva succumbed to cancer last Nov. 24. She was 80.

One of the events that marked her journalism career was the 1983 assassination of Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. The killing of Aquino was the immediate trigger of the 1986 people power revolution, which toppled the dictatorship and restored democracy in the Philippines. Silva covered the EDSA demonstrations and other political crises.

She worked for a number of news organizations.  She was a reporter for dzMM, the radio station of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp.; a freelance producer and a contributor to ABC Australia and  the US-based NBC News. With her late husband, journalist Manuel Silva, she set up and ran the Philippine bureau of the  London-based Visnews for more than two decades.
