“Kuya Cesar,” 69
VETERAN RADIO broadcaster Cesar “Kuya Cesar” Nucum passed away due to cardiac arrest last May 17 in Quezon City. He was 69.
Nucum, who hailed from Candaba, Pampanga, was popular for his slow delivery and baritone voice. Until his death, Nucum hosted the dzMM talk shows Dear Kuya Cesar  and Ikaw sa Likod ng mga Awit, which featured songs from the 1950s and 1960s.
Nucum joined ABS-CBN before the martial law years, and rejoined it after the network reopened following the 1986 Edsa uprising.

Nievera, 83
Evaristo “Estong” Nievera, former chief photographer of the Sunday Times Magazine, died in his sleep last May 23 in New York. He was 83.
Born on Feb. 25, 1924, Nievera served in the merchant marine in the US in 1946. When he returned to Manila, Nievera worked as photojournalist at Time/Life and then at the Philippine Herald. Among the events he covered for the Herald were the battle between the government and the communist Huk movement and the rise of Ramon Magsaysay to the presidency.
Nievera later moved to The Manila Times, his photos gracing the cover of the paper’s weekly magazine for which he won many local and international awards. He also won a worldwide photo contest exhibited in the World’s Fair in New York.
In 1978, Estong migrated with his family to the United States where he worked as an advertising photographer.
