Women journalists killed in Mexico
The bodies of two Mexican journalists were found last September 1 in a park in Mexico City a day after they were reported missing, Article 19 reported.
Freelance reporter Rocío González Trápaga and Contralinea magazine founder and veteran journalist Marcela Yarce Viveros were found dead on Thursday morning (1 September) in a park in the Iztapalapa borough in Mexico City. They were reported missing the night of August 31.
According to a police report, two joggers noticed the naked corpses of González Trápaga and Yarce Viveros covered by a tarp around 7:00 am behind the San Nicolás Tolentino Pantheon in Iztapalapa. Their hands and feet were bound and their necks bore strangulation marks. Both had at least one gunshot wound.
Authorities are still looking into the motive for the killing, but Mexico City Attorney General Miguel Angel Mancera said that the police are looking into robbery as the possible motive.
The International Press Institute (IPI) reported that Yarce Viveros was the head of public relations of Contralinea magazine. González Trápaga had worked for Televisa for 20 years and was also owner of a foreign exchange bureau at the Mexico City international airport.
The Los Angeles Times reported that “the killings appeared to be the first murders of media employees “in the relatively safe harbor” of Mexico City since the beginning of a wave of violence in recent years as government forces battle drug cartels.”
The number of media killings in Mexico now hiked to 10 according to IPI Death Watch. (ARTICLE 19/IFEX)
