Hate crimes
Cheers to the Philippines Graphic for dedicating an issue on issues affecting lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders (LGBT).
The July 11 issue of the Graphic focused on the rising number of hate crimes against the LGBT community, proposed legislation against discrimination, same-sex unions, relationships, and AIDS.
The LGBT community was recently ridiculed because of some groups’ opposition to the recent mass union of gay and lesbian couples in Baguio City.
As of June 17, the Philippine LGBT Hate Crime Watch, a group composed of lawyers, students, activists, and others who document and monitor hate crime cases, had recorded 28 hate crimes this year against the community—a number close to the recorded 29 in 2010. A total of 103 hate crimes against the LGBT community since 1996 have been recorded in the Philippines.
