Knight offers international fellowships for 2011

Reporters, news executives and entrepreneurs owning or planning to put up publications outside the United States may be chosen as one of the nine International Knight Fellows at Stanford University for 2011-2012.

On its 40th year, the Knight Fellowships have again opened applications for international fellows. Applications will be accepted until Dec. 15.

Named after the American publisher and editor John S. Knight the fellowship seeks international journalists “from countries where the news media can work as a significant agent of change, both in nurturing free press and fostering innovation,” according to its web site.

Eligible for the program are full-time reporters and editors who are either employed for media news agencies or doing freelance work; journalism entrepreneurs whose work or proposals can make an impact in the journalism industry; and journalism business and management executives such as publishers, general managers and station managers.

Fellows will spend the whole academic year in residence at Stanford University. Each will receive a stipend of $60,000. Additional allowances will be given for housing, childcare, health insurance, books, equipment and moving expenses.

The Knight International fellowship is funded by grants from the Fulbright program, the Knight Foundation, the Shin-young Journalism Fund, the Lyle and Corrine Nelson International Journalism Fellowship Fund and the Yahoo! International Journalism Fund. A slot is reserved for one fellow, sponsored by Yahoo, for any country that faces restrictions on free press.

Candidates must submit two essays: a proposal of how they will spend their fellowship year and a journalistic autobiography. They must also submit an accomplished application form. Application instructions may be accessed in full here.

In 2009, ABS-CBN reporter Nadia Trinidad received the international fellowship for. Knight Fellows from Asia in 2010 include Madhu Acharya from Nepal and Sahar Ghazi from Pakistan.

Inquiries may be sent through email.
